Hi, I’m Ben Cravens. I was born in New Zealand, and grew up between here and the US, because of my parent’s academic work. I consider myself a Kiwi-American.
I first started reading about AI online back in high school, when I discovered the rationalist blogosphere. I became convinced that the fundamental question of our time would be adapting our society to technological change. At university I studied broadly in philosophy, math, history, computer science, and physics, eventually graduating with physics honors.
I now work as a Machine Learning engineer. I’m also studying part time a masters in AI focused on policy.
Unlike many people in this space, I primarily consider myself a Christian, not a rationalist or effective altruist. I’m interested in building a future where humans are empowered by AI, and I believe good governance is the path to doing this.
Everything on this blog is written by me - I sometimes get critical feedback from AI to poke holes in my arguments, but I never copy paste AI writing or use it as a source.
In my spare time, I enjoy weightlifting, reading, hanging out with my fiancee, staying social, and being in nature.
